Costume Panel Descriptions:
The One Ring Celebration is pleased to offer an unprecedented quantity of Lord of the Rings Costuming Programs for your entertainment and education. Our panel of experts will offer up discussions, demonstrations, and displays of costumes representing the many races and cultures of Tolkien’s Middle Earth. Learn how others have made their own costumes and how you can too. Programs will be geared from the beginner to the expert, with close-up demonstrations of specific techniques and broad overviews of the various looks. There will be specialized panels about armor and prosthetics, and even some workshops for children, too!
Discovering the Deepest Secrets of Middle-earth: Moderated by Special Guest Daniel Falconer Take a guided tour behind the scenes into the development of the look of The Lord of the Rings with Daniel Falconer, Senior Designer at Weta Workshop. As a Tolkien fan himself, he was among those who sought to layer the films with as much rich detail taken from the books as possible. Join him on this illustrated trip through some of the less obvious little details dotted through the trilogy and hear how they came about.
Taking That First Stitch: Doing the Research and Getting Started: Moderated by Cat Devereaux and Judy Grivich Ever watch a movie and want the outfit an actor is wearing on the screen. We’ll teach you where to look for images, and how to break the costumes down into layers to make your research and replication easier. If you’ve never sewn or hardly sewn, don’t worry! Creating costumes may sound scary, but it really isn’t. It just takes a bit of imagination and a willingness to try new things. We’ll teach you the beginner’s dos and don’ts, and help you overcome the fear of that first trip to the fabric store, asking for help, scrounging thrift shops, and entering your first masquerade.
Of Cardboard and Kings: Simple Techniques in Arms & Armor: Moderated by Julia McGee Prince’s Armor for a Paupers price tag: Thankfully there are alternatives to leather craft and metalworking; ones you can find in your local craft or department store! Using accessible and cheap materials to simulate metal and leather, our panel of experts will show you how they have created some amazing armor, chain mail, weapons and props out of everything from craft foam to paper-mâché!
The Armory Expert: Professional Techniques for Arms and Armor: Moderated by Judy Grivich Into serious armor and prop making? Want to take it to a higher level, but still don’t feel like putting on 50 pounds of metal? Get an introduction to advanced techniques from our panel of experts. Learn some basics about leather working. Find out how the movie industry uses plastics; vacuum-forming, resin casting, silicone mold making, sculpting, fiberglassing, PVC pipe chain mail, and how you can apply the same techniques.
Ugly is Only Skin Deep: Prosthetics & Hairpieces: Moderated by Ed Martinez Creating a new you with hair and make-up: Middle-earth is filled with pointy-eared elves, hairy-footed hobbits, long bearded wizards, and lots of really nasty guys with very bad complexions. Makeup and hair played a tremendous part in creating the look of the Middle Earth population. Our panel of experts will explain and demonstrate how it was done, and techniques you can use.
Half-Pint Halflings: Costuming your Kids: Moderated by Laura Bradway “Mom, can you make me into an Elf?” Adults shouldn’t have all the fun. Ever wonder how to make your kids into an Elf, Hobbit, Orc or Ranger? Kid’s costumes needn’t be as complex as adult costumes and should have some built in safety and growth features. From assembling “closet creations” to making them from scratch, we’ll show you how easy it can be to put a smile on a little Elf’s face.
Rawhide to Gossamer: Fabrics & Materials: Moderated by Cat Devereaux Fabrics define the costume. Your choice of materials has a major effect on the look of a costume: it helps to define whether the character is a princess or a pauper, an elf or a hobbit. Come with clean hands: we’ll have lots of fabrics for you to touch and feel so that you can learn the differences. We will also point out alternatives for the budget conscious.
Patterns of Defense: Making Armor Templates: Moderated by Julia McGee “But nobody’s ever made it before!” Armor looks complex and almost impossible to make without a pattern, but it isn’t! The pattern can be broken down into basic template pieces that can be fabricated in many different materials. Learn how to create these pattern pieces so your armor will fit, and then catch our Sunday Armor panels on the various techniques for using the templates to create you own armor, props and weapons.
The Middle Earth Tailor: Cut and Fit: Moderated by Cat Devereaux “Why am I wearing a bag? Or: how can I make my costume fit? Getting the correct fit on a costume means choosing the right pattern for your body type and then fitting it to your body to best create the LOTR character you are after. Learn what a muslin is (and no, we don’t just mean a type of fabric) Learn some basic techniques for necklines and sleeves that will make everything that you sew fit better, whether it’s a costume or everyday wear.
Humans and Hobbits and Elves, Oh My!: Dressing Middle-Earth: Moderated by Jules Kelly Tolkien’s Middle-earth is a complex world of many races. Peter Jackson and his design team have created a unique world in which each race and culture can be visually differentiated by their clothing. Experience a general overview and see what separates out each of these very unique groups. Learn how other costumers have interpreted the vision, and get some inspiration for your own costumes.
Some Things Wicked: Villains and Evil Characters: Moderated by Ed Martinez Bad guys wanna have fun too! Or at least scare the neighborhood: The villains of Middle-earth wear some of the most complex costumes in the motion picture series, whether they were made of fabric, metal, or plastic. Get an overview of the Orcs, Nazgul, Monsters, and Evil Men, and learn how you might create “the look” with less than 50 yards of cloth or a full armory.
A Delicate Balance: Elves & Humans: Moderated by Cat Devereaux Vive les differences... and the similarities: The human and elf costumes have quite a different look. Each race is easy to recognize – the grace of elves vs. the earthiness of the humans. However, the basic shape of the garments is very similar: the difference is in the detail. Come learn the styles as well as pattern modification tricks, fabric and detailing tips to accomplish both looks.
The Shape of the Shire: Costuming Hobbits: Moderated by Mindy Dupler-Singer Everyone wants to be a Hobbit! Hobbit costumes are a blast and allow a lot of creativity. They’re the most comfortable costumes of Middle-earth. They are a great place to start even if you cannot sew. Pieces can be scrounged and modified. Don’t worry if you’re into more advanced hobbit costuming, we’ll cover those topics too. And bring your fuzzy feet! (We’ll discuss those toes too.)
Building a Better Masquerade: The Post-Mortem: Moderated by Judy Grivich Masquerades are creative fun, but they’re also learning experiences. We all think well in retrospect. Come get a review from the director and staff of yesterday’s Costume Competition. Learn what you can do the next time around that might improve your chances. Offer suggestions for improvement to the staff; this is a first-time event and you can help us make it better for next year. This panel is an open forum
If that weren’t enough, we will also offer just as many close-up demonstrations of specific costuming techniques such as weaving chain mail, fabric painting, leather working and sculpting Hobbit ears. Additionally, there will be a display of fan-made costumes that will be changed out on a daily basis. |

The One Ring Celebration Art Show is proud to announce that in addition to entries from fan artists far and wide, that all the Artist Guests present will be displaying their artwork in the show.
Tim Kirk will be having one of his most comprehensive showings in years, and we hear it’s quite impressive. Colleen Doran is much newer to Tolkien artwork, but not to Tolkien fandom, and she’s got some tremendous pieces to show. Tim and Colleen’s partner George has also arranged for a special display of artwork by Donato Giancola, who is not attending, but is an amazing artist who recently did some cover artwork for the paperback versions of the books.
These fine artists will be joined by none other than "Silmarillion" illustrator, Ted Nasmith, who just released an updated version of that fine book. Finally, but definitely not least, Daniel Falconer of WETA Workshops has received permission to display some of his conceptual designs for the films.
Please do not miss the opportunity to see some of this fine artwork on display in our Art Show room, adjacent to the Exhibitor’s room. There will be a silent auction running Friday and Saturday, and then a live auction on Sunday in the Scholars track room. You can also meet all these fine artists, with the exception of Donato Giancola, who is not attending, in the Exhibitor’s room.
Tim and Colleen will have a table called Flights of Imagination with partner George Beahm. Ted Nasmith will be at the Tolkien Forever booth on Saturday from 1pm-2pm, and again on Sunday from 11am-Noon. And Daniel Falconer will be at the Sideshow/WETA booth off and on during the weekend, they will post his schedule soon.
For those interested in buying displayed artwork, please read the rules for bidding.
